Hayford graduated from L.I.F.E. Bible College, Los Angeles (1956) and Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, California (1970). He was the national youth director of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel from 1956 to 1973. In 1965, he joined the faculty of L.I.F.E. Bible College and went on to become dean of students there and its president in 1977.
He also found time to serve as pastor at Church of the Way, starting in 1969; this church eventually grew to over 7,000 members.
