Hatch attended Cambridge and Pembroke College, Oxford (BA in honors, 1857). He was ordained an Anglican priest in 1859, then went to Toronto, Canada, where he became a professor of classics at Trinity College.

He later became rector of a high school in Québec. He returned to England in 1867, serving as Vice-Principal of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. In 1883, he became rector at Purleigh. A well-known scholar, he wrote a concordance to the Septuagint, essays on Biblical Greek, gave Bampton Lectures in 1880, and Hibbert Lectures in 1888. His works include:
